The Department of Bioinformatics, the young and energetic department of Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences, had its beginnings in the year 2005 with a 4-year B.Tech program and two year M.Tech program in Bioinformatics. This young and academically-active department has won many laurels to its credit in a span of nine years. Currently this has been expanded to offer M.Phil/Ph.D in Bioinformatics. Out of eight faculty members in the department, six have doctoral degrees with diversified research expertise.
Faculties have received government funding to the tune of 2.33 Crores, under SERB & SERC- DST Young Scientists, and DBT-Ramalingaswami Fellowships. The thrust area includes Structural Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, Molecular Modeling, and Protein structure & functional analysis. Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary science at the interface of computer science, biology, chemistry and medicine. The Department has signed MoU with Genome Life Sciences Ltd., Chennai and Central Silkboard Germplasm Centre (CSGRC, Hosur) for employability and the research work. The goal of the programme is to develop and apply computationally intensive approaches to increase the understanding of life processes and improvement of human health.
They have been trained in premier institutions in India and abroad and a few of them have held senior positions in bioinformatics and pharmaceutical companies. The students and faculty members are actively involved in research and the department has many ongoing projects funded by most of the major funding agencies of the country. Our faculties and research scholars update themselves regularly on the latest advances in their respective fields by attending conferences, seminars and workshops
