OBJECTIVES OF THE CONFERENCE
The Indian Systems of Medicine have identified 1500 medicinal plants, of which 500 species are mostly used in the preparation of drugs. The medicinal plants contribute to cater 80% of the raw materials used in the preparation of drugs. The effectiveness of these drugs mainly depends upon the proper use and sustained availability of genuine raw materials. They play a significant role in providing primary health care services to rural people. They serve as therapeutic agents, nutraceutics as well as important raw materials for the manufacture of traditional and modern medicine. Substantial amount of foreign exchange can be earned by exporting medicinal plants to other countries. In this way indigenous medicinal plants play significant role of an economy of a country. It is on this basis that the School of Biotechnology, is organizing a National Conference on “Medicinal and Aromatic Plants for Public Health – 2008 (MAPPH-2008), which would create a forum for scientists, researchers, engineers, science students and entrepreneurs to interact and exchange information, ideas and share knowledge on the frontiers of Biotechnology, Medicinal plants and therapeutics and nanotechnology etc.,
