ANIMAL HOUSE FACILITY (CPCSEA, GOVT. OF INDIA APPROVED FACILITY)

The Animal House Facility was established in KITS to carry out research on small animal models. It is registered with the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) (Registration Number 1537/PO/a/11/CPCSEA) under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying Government of India. An Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) will evaluate the proposals on animal experimentation and is authorized to approve the projects using animal models. This facility help the students and research scholars to validate the pharmacological effect of extracts, compounds, and formulations using animal models. Experiments using Mice, Rat, Rabbits, Guinea Pig and Hamsters can be done in the Animal House Facility of KITS with the approval of IAEC.


OBJECTIVES:

Hands on training will be provided in handling small mammals for research. In addition to it, Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) method will be observed for certain techniques to ensure competency of participants. The animals include mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits. The training includes: Providing the student with an understanding of the ethics and regulations that govern the use of animals in research as per CPCSEA guidelines. Hands-on training for animal handling and restraint, sexing, routes of administration and collection of body fluids. Imparting skills required to perform surgical and non surgical procedures.


SESSIONS:

Module - I
  • Ethical Considerations in Handling Laboratory Animals according to CPCSEA guidelines.
  • Maintenance and care of Various Laboratory Animals – Cage, bedding, feeding, cleaning, disposal.
Module - II
  • General Physiology, Sexing, Marking techniques, Body Condition Scoring (BS), Grimace Scoring.
  • Selection of Appropriate Animal Models for various diseases.
Module - III
  • Handling & restraining various animals, routes of administration and withdrawal of body fluids.
  • Non-Surgical procedures-Paw Edema, generation of ulcers.
  • Cell Line derived Xenograft (CDX) for Cancer study.
Module - IV
  • Analgesics & Anesthesia methods
  • Surgical procedures- I – Biopsies, Implants
  • Surgical Procedures-II - Wound healing studies, etc.
