Universities in Israel

The electrochemical laboratory was established with the technical support of Prof. Yoram Oren of Zukerburg Institute of Water Research of Ben-Gurion University, Israel.  A team of faculty members of KITS visited the Water Laboratories of Israel for research collaboration.

Ben-Gurion University

  • Yoram Oren has provided technical guidance and support in creating the laboratory facilities on electrochemical techniques, such as, Electrocoagulation, Electrodialysis and Capacitive Deionization in treatment of groundwater, wastewater and drinking water.
  • He has extended his technical guidance to three Ph.D and Masters level students in the Water Institute.
  • A grey water treatment device is being experimented similar to the one developed at the Desert Research Institutes of Ben-Gurion University.
  • More than half a dozen students of KITS are involved in research works at Ben-Gurion University.
  • Govindan who worked on Electrocoagulation is pursuing Post-Doctoral Studies in Korea. Dr. Chidambaram who worked on Membrane Technology is doing his Post-Doctoral Studies in Ben-Gurion University. Dr. Tamil Selvan who worked on Capacitive Deionization is pursuing his Post-Doctoral Studies in Taiwan.

Technion University

  • Chidambaram has pursued his Post-Doctoral Work under Prof. Carlos Dosoretz, Grand Water Institute at Technion.
  • Ityhak Shmulevich of the Grand Water Institute of Technion visited KITS, interacted with the faculty members and gave a series of lectures in different departments of KITS.
  • Joint research work has been initiated in the areas of electrochemical methods, development of antifouling membranes and eco-bio blocks in greywater treatment.
  • Carlos Dosoretz had evaluated the Ph.D thesis of a research scholar of Water Institute.
  • Avi Sheviv, Director of Grand Water Institute of Technion evaluated the Ph.D thesis of a scholar of Water Institute.
  • Agriculture Research Organization (Volcani Centre)

Two Scientists including the Director visited KITS and interacted with the faculty members. Joint research projects have been initiated, after a visit of faculty members of KITS to Volcani Centre.

Germany (Technical University Berlin, RWTH, Aachen)

IGSI (Integrated Urban Development and Co-Production for Indian Cities) is a network of leading German research and planning institutions funded by Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Germany (Land of Ideas), which strives for knowledge transfer between Germany and India in  area of Smart Cities. Karunya joined hands with Technical University of Berlin in Smart City Initiatives. As a part of IGSI network activities, the UrbanLab (Conference and Workshop) has been conducted at Karunya during December 4-8th, 2017.

Cape Breton University, Canada

  • Under the on-going collaboration between Cape Breton University and five academic institutions in Tamil Nadu-India, Prof P Jegathambal of KITS was one of the five Indian professors hosted by the Department of Chemistry of Cape Breton University for the Summer Research Exchange of 2018. She worked with the CBU research collaborators to develop a cost-effective water filter for use in the rural areas, wherein majority are economically underprivileged. The aim was to use already existing traditional materials used in water treatment to develop the filter.
  • In collaboration with the research team of Cape Breton University, a patent on ‘A household cost-effective biocompatible non-UV nanocomposite membrane-based water purification system for rural and peri-urban areas’ has been filed.

NASA

KITS partnered with NASA in establishing an AERONET in the campus, which is part of the global network initiatives of NASA.

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA

KITS entered into a MoA with the Water Equipment and Policy of University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for joint venture in the area of water management.

UniREM Technology, LLC, Pittsburg, USA

Unirem Technology provides patented high technology natural products that absorb oil, other hydrocarbons and facilitate bioremediation. PRP® was developed by NASA and is entirely natural and the most effective bio-remediation absorbent available. KITS is involved in preliminary research on application of PRP for the removal of oil and textile dyeing effluent.

SUEZ

KITS is an academic partner for SUEZ in India for implementation of 24 x7 water supply scheme. Research studies on chlorine decay studies have been carried out. Students have undergone B. Tech and M. Tech internship at SUEZ. Training programs on Smart Water Meter System, Water GEM and Computational Optimization of water distribution system have been organized for students.

In the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage

KITS served as a Member of the Working Group on Tidal Waters of the ICID and actively participated in the events organized by the ICID.

National

Collaborative works are carried out with the following institutions

  • National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee (MoWR)
  • TamilNadu Agriculture University
  • Centre for Water Resources Development and Management
  • National Environmental Engineering Research Institute

The Water Institute has linked with industries like Devi Threads PVT Ltd, Coimbatore and Aruldas Electroplating Industry, Coimbatore for experimental studies.

Devi Threads Pvt Ltd, Coimbatore – A small scale textile dyeing unit

Collaborative research is in progress to evaluate the performance of multichannel baffle type electrocoagulation using TiO2 /Al electrodes in treatment of textile dyeing effluent. A prototype model has been installed in the industry and the performance of the reactor in removing dye has been evaluated for the effluent directly coming out of the process unit.

ATM Chem Equipment Pvt Ltd, Hosur and Aruldas Electroplating Works, Coimbatore

ATM Chem Equipment Pvt Ltd and Aruldas Electroplating work are the industrial collaborators in the DST project under Technology Stream for the Demonstration to lab-scale project entitled “High Performance Integrated Two-Stage Electrochemical Technology for Recovery of Water from Electroplating effluent with Real Time Monitoring & Control System”. The ATM Chem Equipment is involved in the fabrication of the Model and the performance evaluation of the model in treating electroplating effluent. Karunya has linked up with them in joint investigations.

Ray Contractors

The CEO of the Company is one of the inventors of the patent on ‘A Novel Foam Block for Treating Textile Effluent’ which is one of the outcomes of the ongoing funded project of the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change. To transfer the technology to product form, Fellowships for two scholars are provided at KITS.
