DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PHYSICS
Department of Applied Physics
The Department of Applied Physics was started in the year 2008. It has flourished towards the stated objective of providing high quality post graduate education along with cutting edge research in the frontier areas of energy, health sciences, water and food technology which are the research areas of focus of the Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences. From the time of its inception, physics department is dedicated to give post graduate education on a par with international institutions of eminence and has developed state of the art laboratories in many different areas of applied physics research.
The Department has faculty members who have completed their doctoral degree and post-doctoral fellowships in national and international institutions. The faculty members are dedicated to give holistic education in the novel areas of physics and inculcate fundamental research aptitude among the students. They are specialized in ‘Materials Science’, ‘Molecular Quantum Mechanics’, ‘Solid State Physics’, ‘Crystal Growth’, ‘Thin Film Technology’, ‘Condensed Matter Physics’, ‘Bio-Compatible Materials’, ‘Environmental Radiation Physics’, ‘Medical Radiation Physics’, and ‘Astronomy and Astrophysics’.
The department is offering two-year M.Sc Physics Program and Ph. D. (doctorate) degree program in Physics. The post graduate students those who have graduated from Karunya are spread throughout the globe for their higher studies and the research scholars who have completed Ph.D. degree are pursuing their post-doctoral research in reputed foreign institutions. There is a learner centric approach at physics department which reinvigorates the minds of the students and the scholars alike. The Department of Applied Physics has thus maintained a global standard in its academics, research output and students’ support and progression, making it an eminent international institution.
The Department of Physics also offering four years B.Sc Optometry programme which is having tie up with the leading eye hospitals at Coimbatore district. Due to the excellent and latest lab facilities, students get exposure to recent advancements and technology in the ophthalmic industry. Optometry students can choose general practice or select such specialties as contact lenses, orthotics, and vision therapy, learning disabilities, pediatrics and occupational vision.
Our Vision

The Program Outcomes and Program Specific Outcomes are designed with the vision and mission of our Institute in general and the vision and mission of the Physics Department in particular. The assessment methodology followed by the department is continuous assessment method. Periodically, internals are conducted (3 in total) followed by an end semester examination for a particular subject. Internal Quality Assessment is also given at regular intervals which tend to cover the Course Outcome of a particular subject. After the end semester results are out, the course outcomes are calculated for every subject. The direct CO is calculated based on the marks obtained by a student in a particular subject. It is given 80% weightage. The indirect CO is calculated based on the feedback received from the passing out students and it is given 20% weightage. After the final cumulative CO is obtained, PO Attainment is calculated.
The cumulative CO is taken into consideration for the calculation of direct PO attainment. This direct PO attainment is given 80% weightage. It is calculated from the course articulation matrix which maps the course outcomes of a particular subject with the program outcomes and a matrix table is made. The direct PO attainment is a result of calculation arising out of this exercise. The indirect PO attainment is calculated from the feedbacks on the POs collected from passing out students (current), alumni (Yesteryear students), parents of the students (current and past years) and employers. They are given a questionnaire containing the POs and they are asked to provide their opinion about how much they think they have achieved or confident of achieving these POs. This indirect PO attainment is given 20% weightage.
The final cumulative PO attainment is thus addition of 80% direct PO attainment and 20% indirect PO attainment. This is the procedure which is followed at the Department of Applied Physics for calculation of attainment of POs.
