Research Facilities

SOLID STATE IONICS LAB
The Solid State Ionics lab was established in Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences in the year of 2013 through the funding by DAE-BRNS and DST-FAST TRACK, Government of India. The lab was facilitated for the research on Solid State Ionics for Energy Storage Devices. The lab has the facilities to test the electrical properties of any solid state material like metal oxides, polymer membranes etc., and has come out with publications in standard quality journals. The lab has collaborated with the Advanced Batteries Lab, National University of Singapore, where the scholar visited the lab for a period of six months for the part of his PhD work.
Facilities available:
- Electrochemical Workstation
- Doctor Blade Desktop thin film Coater
- Programmable high temperature muffle furnace
- Hydrothermal set-up
- Vacuum Oven
- Anerobic dry chamber
- Hydraulic Pelletizer

THIN FILM BATTERIES LAB
On one hand, lithium based batteries and alternative battery technology systems like magnesium, zinc, and aluminium based batteries are moving to new form factors, becoming paper-thin, adaptable, rollable, stretchable, etc. On the other hand, manufacturers try hard to offer large batteries aimed at addressing the large-sized electric vehicle, residential and grid applications. The SOLID STATE BATTERIES are considered the next generation batteries with high energy density and safety for any applications including electric vehicles. The THIN FILM BATTERIES LAB was set up in the year 2018 sponsored by the SERB-DST-EMR, Government of India through the project to the tune of ₹ 44,35,844, focus on making thin film batteries which is the topmost need for the battery powered miniaturized devices in space and healthcare devices. The Pulsed Laser Deposition unit for the making of thin film materials for the battery applications was sponsored by Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences for the successful completion of the project on thin film batteries.
Facilities available:
- Pulsed Laser Deposition Unit
- Automated O2 and H2O controlled (< 1 ppm) glove box for assembly of coin type cells and other energy devices
- Coin cell crimper
- Charge-Discharge Analyzer

THIN FILM COATINGS LAB
The Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences has facilitated the Thin Film Coatings Lab in the year of 2008 with cutting edge industry ready equipment’s like Physical Vapour Deposition, Sputtering and Spray Pyrolysis units and other thin film coating and testing facilities to the tune of ₹ 20,00000. The students at M. Sc level get the opportunity to handle all the equipment’s, making them industry ready and well trained for higher studies. Several students from in and around Tamil Nadu visits the lab to get trained in thin film material making. Many workshops has been and being conducted repetitively throughout the year to reach the scientific community.
Facilities available:
- Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD)
- DC sputtering
- Spin coating
- Spray coating
- Electrospinning, Automatic spray pyrolysis unit
