ALGAE BIOMASS RESEARCH LABORATORY
Algae Biomass Research Laboratory is a sponsored research lab established in 2012 with a vision to “Research on micro and macro algae”. The Ongoing research activities address issues on water, energy, environment and health using algae. Algae are capable of performing photosynthesis and produce half of the atmospheric oxygen by using greenhouse gases to grow photo autotrophically thus reducing the carbon footprint. The lab is funded by both national and international agencies and engages in research activities on exploration of novel algae strains, phytoremediation, nutraceuticals, phytotherapeutics to add value addition to microalgal products.

The research lab focuses on biotechnology based production of value added products using cost effective and energy efficient processes. Projects funded by DST, DBT, NTRF and UGC have enhanced the capacity of the lab by equipping with sophisticated equipment that cater to the Research and Development initiatives besides training research scholars, undergraduate and postgraduate students and IAESTE interns. The lab is equipped with Algae Growth Chamber, Thermal cycler (PCR), Microscope with documentation systems, Deep freezer and the facilities are extended to carry out interdisciplinary research in algal biotechnology.
ANIMAL TISSUE CULTURE LAB
Animal Tissue Culture Lab
Animal cell culture is an In Vitro tool for the study of animal cell growth. It is used to mimic the in vivo cell behavior in an easily manipulated highly selective environment. The primary application of an animal cell culture is for the investigation of cell cycle control mechanisms, cancer cell characterizations, Monoclonal Antibodies, toxicology and cancer studies Animal Cell Culture lab in the Department of Biotechnology is well established with all the necessary instruments such as Inverted Microscope, CO2 incubator, weighing balance, pH meters, incubators and ovens, autoclaves and cookers, Laminar air flow chamber, double distillation unit and the lab is well stocked with glassware, plastic ware and basic laboratory chemicals for the research work. Many of our students and Scholars are currently working in this research lab and are publishing papers in various research articles in the reputed journals of Biotechnology.
The research topic focused in the lab is as follows:

- Oral Cancer, Cervical cancer and Lung cancer cell lines are well maintained for research
- Toxicology studies in In Vitro model Systems
- Cytotoxin as vaccine for the control of Dengue Virus
- Currently working in the field of Tissue engineering also.
Bioprocess Engineers work at the frontiers of biological and engineering sciences to “Bring Engineering To Life” through the conversion of biological materials into other forms needed by mankind. Application areas commonly associated with bioprocess engineering include the design and operation of fermentation systems, development of biological products, application and testing of product separation technologies, to monitor and control biological processes, production of biofuels and many more. Like other engineering disciplines, bioprocess engineers are trained in the application of engineering sciences and problem solving techniques. What separates them from other engineers is their understanding of how every engineering field relates to living materials. With the rapid growth of biologically based technologies, bioprocess engineers are uniquely qualified to solve the problems of today and tomorrow. The demand for bio-process engineers continues to grow. They provide a bridge between the research lab and the economic, large-scale implementation of biotechnologies and food production systems.
The Biosafety facility established at the department of biotechnology belongs to the BSL Class-II category. It houses a BSL 2B Biosafety Cabinet with a virus burnout attachment. This facility provides researcher to work on moderate risk pathogens such as Influenza virus, Hepatitis virus, Hog Cholera Virus, Rabies virus bacteria such as Aeromonas, Mycobacterium leprae, Haemophilus, Klebsiella, Closterdium tetani, Enterobactrial species and fungi such as Candida, Cryptococus and also parasites such as Ascaris, Entamoeba, Plasmodium, Taenia solium, Trypanosoma etc. This clean room facility helps the scholars, students and researchers to carry our studies in pathogenic organisms leading to development of products in healthcare, agriculture and environment. The studies carried out using risky microbes are monitored by the Institutional Biosafety Committee.
The Genomics facility recently established at the department of biotechnology is one of the cutting edge technologies available here at Karunya with Applied Biosystems - Real Time PCR Quant 3 Q PCR system, ABI Verti 96 well gradient PCR and Nanodrop-1 spectrophotometer unit. Real Time is a technology used to detect the presence of the desired nucleic acids and more importantly determine its concentration hence the name Quantitative PCR or Q-PCR. It is an extremely sensitive technique and has been employed for a wide variety of applications in genomics. Its applications include monitoring and quantifying gene expression both in research as well as in clinical diagnosis such as cytokine profiling, cancer, diagnosis of infectious agents especially viruses and also in the assessment of viral load which helps in determining antiviral treatment.
Plant genomics and microbial genomics leading to identification of genetically modified organisms are also achieved using this facility. The gel electrophoresis system and the gel documentation system strengthens the capabilities of the facility.

Cell Biology Lab
Cell biology is a branch of biology that studies the structure, function and behaviour of cells. Cell biology encompasses both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and can be divided into many sub-topics which may include the study of cell communication, cell cycle like mitosis, meiosis and cell composition which in this lab is analysed through staining procedures and morphological analysis using microscopes. On told of cell biology ,when it is coupled alongside immunology ,this cell biology and immunology lab deals with the innate and adaptive immune functions of the human system ,the lab holds procedures to evaluate the nature of antigen antibody interactions and methods to validate these interactions through assays such as ELISA , Immunoblotting and Immunoelectrophoresis.
DOWNSTREAM PROCESSING LAB
The downstream processing Lab deals with the technologies and strategies developed for recovering and purifying the various products based on bioprocessing of microbial cultures or plant cells or animal cells. The laboratory is dedicated to educate the students on various unit operations involved in downstream processing with the bench top laboratory equipment. The laboratory course goes in parallel with the Downstream Processing theory Course and involves different experiments close to the actual situations in industry/ research. The lab offers the students an opportunity to develop cost effective downstream technology approaches that meet the demands of the bioproducts with high culture yield.

Funded Research Lab
Department has received funding for research from various national and international funding agencies like DRDO, ICSSR, TNSCST, DBT, ICMR, DST-SERB, BESI, NTRF and UBCHE at the tune of 2 crores. New facilities have been created with sophisticated equipment funded by Government agencies to undertake research in frontier areas. The faculty members have national as well as international collaborations to leverage the scientific advantage and develop mutually beneficial scientific interactions. The lab remains open to pursue and promote world-class research and training at the frontiers of cancer therapeutics, Water treatment technologies, algal research, phytotherapeutics and microbial resistance studies. The outcome of the project can be either converted into scientific publications, products and patents.
BIOINFORMATICS RESEARCH LAB
Welcome to the Bioinformatics lab at Department of Biotechnology KITS. We develop and apply in silico tools that apply computational chemistry, molecular modeling, and theoretical systems biology to simulate molecular and cellular processes. The sophisticated lab facilitys are utilized for academic and research purpose the studies includes lab studies the mechanisms by which transcription factors are recruited to their specific DNA sites, both in vitro and in vivo, and how this recruitment is affected by changes in the DNA or protein sequence. We use protein binding microarray assays and computational approaches that combine different types of information relevant for DNA binding and transcriptional regulation.

High Performance Computing Lab
The High Performance Computing Laboratory at KITS, Department of biotech Conducts research in several areas with IBM BioCluster server machine works on optimizing compilers, performance modeling and optimization, parallel algorithms, and software engineering. Example projects include static and dynamic analysis of software for building application performance models, ensuring software quality, or detecting security vulnerabilities; using machine learning and other approaches to model run-time characteristics of software; developing data mining techniques to study and improve HPC software engineering processes; applying natural language processing methods to study and improve HPC software developer productivity; designing new algorithms or improving existing ones in several application areas, including large-scale dynamic graphs, computational physics, and computational biology.
The Biochemistry laboratory has emerged as a prominent and necessary component in the preparation of undergraduate and postgraduate students for careers in the molecular life sciences (biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, neurochemistry, etc.). These students must gain extensive laboratory experience working with biomolecules, and a formal lab course is usually the best way to get that experience. This step prepares students for future participation in research at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as jobs in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries. Lab is well equipped with the latest instruments and can accommodate a batch of 45 students.
The biotechnology research lab provides working areas, instrumental facilities focusing on the daily need of research scholars. Apart from autoclaves, shaker incubator for routine microbial media preparation, incubation, the lab is equipped with a vertical HEPA laminar airflow system, fixed-angle rotor refrigerated Eppendorf centrifuge for downstream processing. Deep freezer (-80°C) supports storage of culture, molecular constructs. Bioanalytical analytical instruments such as Hitachi UV-visible Spectrophotometer supports analysis of biochemicals under single wavelength/ wavelength scan and kinetic. Transilluminator is used to detect nucleic acid following electrophoresis. A research microscope coupled with a camera helps to analyze microbiological specimens. The presence of a distillation unit, microwave, pH-conductivity meters support the students daily need in their research.
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY LAB
Our molecular biology lab provides a platform for basic molecular biology research and also genetic engineering. Equipped with millipore water purification system, PCR, Apparatus for electrophoresis, Gel documentation system and other accessory equipments the lab has been the source of good quality research papers. This facility is also being employed for training undergraduate and post graduate students in molecular biology and genetic engineering subjects and gets them prepared to face the biotech industry.

PG Research Lab
PG Research Lab in the department of Biotechnology provides necessary working areas, with basic instrumental facilities to carry out day to day research activities. Apart from routine pH meter, Colorimeter, autoclaves, shaker incubator, HEPA laminar airflow system, we have sophisticated instruments like Thermo-fisher scientific RT-PCR, and NanoDrop Spectrophotometer. Thermo-fisher scientific RT-PCR is used to determine the expression level of target genes in biomedical science research including SARS-CoV, immunological response, Cancer management and nanotoxicology studies for semiquantitative analysis. Thermo fisher scientific NanoDrop Spectrophotometer specifically for the measurement of nucleic acid concentrations using small sample volumes as little as one microliter. Refrigerated Remi centrifuge for downstream processing. Deep freezer (-40°C) supports storage of culture, and consumables. Bioanalytical analytical instruments such as Lab-Man UV-visible Spectrophotometer and Gen5 Microplate reader support determination of absorbance at specific wavelength/ wavelength for various assays like MTT assay, MIC.
PLANT TISSUE CULTURE LAB
Plant Tissue Culture laboratory is a specialized research facility established with primary objective to impart technical skills on cutting edge technology on plant tissue culture to biotechnology students. The lab has been designed with state-of-art facilities like media preparation, Glassware washing area, Antechambers, Inoculation room with specialized LAF and Culture Storage room with Incubator Shakers equivalent to commercial tissue culture laboratories. The laboratory has been involved in training the students and research scholars on in vitro drug production through plant suspension culture system, plant transformation and plant propagation of commercially important horticulture crops and medicinal plants and as a research outcome one patent has been filed and published. The research team explores on development of new cutting-edge technology with commercial importance in the field of plant tissue culture.

Our laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that undergraduate and postgraduate students can access according to their needs. Several basic pieces of equipment and instruments are available in the lab for any teaching or research activity. The laboratory is equipped to perform a wide variety of practical tests in bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and molecular diagnostics.
