CPCSEA approved Animal House
The Animal House Facility at Biotech Department is to carry out preclinical research using animal models. The Facility is registered with Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) (Registration Number 1537/PO/a/11/CPCSEA) under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAH&D) constituted under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960.
The establishment has a ground area of 3200 sq.ft and has 'good path' 'bad path' provision, to prevent contamination and a quarantine room to receive newly arrived animals, to be kept under observation. Separate rooms for Autopsy and Dissection are available to carry out operations / dissections.
With a 24 hour Air conditioning system with a Humidifier for the comfort of the animals maintained.
Hitherto Mouse, Rat, Chicken, Rabbit, Guinea pig, Hamster. . . have been used by researchers, for their anti-rabies studies, anti-cancer studies, anti-diabetes studies and for testing the potency and stability of various drugs. As on date 14 study proposals, 37 student projects and 6 patents using animal models has been approved by the IAEC were handled till date. A CPCSEA approved, “Small Animal Breeding Facility” was recently launched to promote Breeding and Research.
Institutional Animal Ethical Committee consists of IAEC nominees appointed by the Government of India and Institutional faculty members as per the CPCSEA Guidelines. The study cleared by IAEC is permitted to procure animals to carry out research as per the guidelines.
Ethical committee on Biomedical and Health research (IEC)
The IEC of facilitates the researchers at KITS, associated institutions and collaborating institutions to obtain ethical clearance for their research involving human beings. This is mandated by the Govt of India. The constituted IEC meets periodically to evaluate proposals submitted by researchers grants clearance based on the merit of the proposals. The proposals may range from medical research requiring body fluids or surgical procedures to human computer interface and AI.
Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBSC)
The IBSC has been constituted to facilitate the researchers at KITS, associated institutions and collaborating institutions to obtain ethical clearance for their research involving pathogenic organisms and research involving genetically engineered organisms. This is mandated by the Govt of India.
The department library is an important source of knowledge to the young minds and develops the habit of reading among the students. Department library helps to impact positively on the academic achievement of the students. Students can perform better during examination by reading various books. The department library plays an important role in teaching/learning process by enhancing a teacher's effectiveness and classroom performance. It promotes individual and group learning, helps in developing student's vocabulary, enhancing comprehension, developing the habit of silent reading and developing problem-solving attitude among students. Library can engage the students and helps the students to learn the best ways to access and use quality information and resources, helps them to enhance their study and research skills. The library serves to support the curriculum and the research of the faculty and students. The department library consists of 520 printed books pertaining to Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetic Engineering, Physiology, Biostatistics etc.
