Overview of Civil Engineering

The Division of Civil Engineering has been in existence since the inception of Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences in 1986 and has grown into a full-fledged Division with specializations in Structural Engineering, Environment and Water Resources Engineering. The B.Tech Civil Engineering program is accredited by NBA. It has grown steadily with its parent institution and has turned out 31 batches of Civil Engineering Graduates. Many of our alumni hold prestigious positions in leading industries, government and academic institutions world-wide. The Division has well qualified faculty members with different areas of specialization with good academic, field and research background.

Our Mission

To create an ideal ambience for learning by integrating theory with practice.
To provide students with opportunities to pursue research to find solutions to the challenges in civil engineering.
To interact with industries in addressing issues concerning infrastructure, resources utilization and environmental protection.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)

  • PEO I: Demonstrate the knowledge acquired to analyse, design and develop solutions, based on the principles of sustainable development.
  • PEO II: Exhibit proficient skills as practicing engineers, academicians and researchers through innovations, products and patents.
  • PEO III: Practice professional ethics while addressing the challenges of the society as consultants, entrepreneurs and pioneers.

Program Outcomes (POs)

Graduates will have ability to:

  • PO1: Engineering Knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, natural sciences, engineering fundamentals specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems
  • PO2: Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature and analyze complex Engineering Problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences.
  • PO3: Design / Development of Solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet specific needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety and the cultural, societal and environmental considerations.
  • PO4: Conduct Investigations of Complex Problems: Use research- based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  • PO5: Modern Tool Usage: Create, Select and Apply appropriate techniques, resources and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modelling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • PO6: The Engineer and Society: Apply Reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  • PO7: Environment and Sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts and demonstrate the knowledge of and need for sustainable development.
  • PO8: Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.
  • PO9: Individual and Team Work: Function effectively as an individual and as a member or leader in diverse teams and in multi-disciplinary settings.
  • PO10: Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large such as being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation make effective presentations and give and receive clear instructions.
  • PO11: Project Management and Finance:Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply this to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multi-disciplinary environments.
  • PO12: Life – Long Learning: Recognize the need for and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and lifelong leaning in the broadest context of technological change.

Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

  • PSO1: Survey, map and plan layouts for buildings and alignment for canals and roads.
  • PSO 2: Analyse, design, detail, execute and evaluate sub and superstructure for all infrastructure projects.
  • PSO 3: Analyse, design, detail, execute and evaluate hydrological and environmental systems.

Programme Outcomes Attainment

Based on the NBA defined mandatory Graduate Attributes (GAs) and the Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) of the programme, the members of the Board of Studies have established the Programme Outcomes (POs). These were then passed on to select alumni and the faculty members of the Division. Based on the inputs received from them, the POs were presented again to the Board of Studies (BOS) for revision and approval. In total, twelve POs were finalized.

Career Prospects

Civil engineering is the oldest and one of the most versatile branches of engineering. Every structure that we see around today is a creation of civil engineering. Civil engineers design, construct, supervise, operate, and maintain large construction projects and systems, including roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and systems for water supply and sewage treatment.

Government Sector- Central Government (UPSC) - IES, CPWD, CWC, Railways, Military. State Government (PSC) - PWD, Awas Vikas, Jal Nigam, PCL, Irrigation Division. Public sector- NTPC, NHPC, IRCON, RITES, SAIL, BHEL, AAJ, HAL, NAL, Oil sector- IOCL, ONGG, HPCL, GAIL.  Private Sector- Building Design and Construction, Real Estate, Dams and Canals, Construction, Planning and Management, Infrastructure-Highways, Airports, Interior designers, Field Surveyors, Archaeological Division, Soil Conservation Division, Developers, Entrepreneurs etc.
