
Department of Food Processing Technology
History
Egged by the remarkable growth of the Indian Food Industry, Karunya Institute of Technology and Sciences with a generous grant to the tune of 4.5 Crores from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Gov. of India established the Division of Food Processing Technology in the year 2005. The vision of the division has been to align itself to national issues such as food security and safety while keeping abreast with international targets such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of no poverty (SDG1), zero hunger (SDG2) and quality education (SDG4).
The division offers B.Tech., M.Tech. and PhD programmes in Food Processing and Engineering and also M.Sc. in Food Science and Technology. These programmes are aimed at creating food engineers, technologist and scientists capable in solving human problems in the fields of food processing, food quality, food safety, packaging, storage and cold chain management. In order to create a vibrant teaching and learning environment, the division follows an “Outcome Based Competency Focussed Curriculum” intertwined with hands-on experience through well-established Pilot scale plant and machinery, Food Quality Testing Laboratory, Food Processing and Training Centre to give each individual student a unique learning experience.
All programmes are supplemented with industrial internships, collaborations and certifications through national and international institutions.

Mission of the Department
- To raise Food Processing Engineers, academicians, researchers and entrepreneurs with high level of technical knowledge and expertise on par with global standards.
- To develop food technocrats with ethics, attitude, values and abilities to apply the acquired know-how and skills for a productive career and entrepreneurial ventures.
- To address the problems related to food safety and nutritional security through eco-friendly food processing and engineering technologies to serve humanity with care and compassion.
